A sea of blue at Island cop's funeral

A Staten Island police officer slain in the line of duty was posthumously promoted to the rank of detective, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced during a memorial service this morning at a Brooklyn funeral home.
Family members, friends and a sea of cops were on hand to bid farewell to Officer Russel Timoshenko -- a Bay Terrace resident who was fatally gunned down at 23 years of age during a traffic stop in Brooklyn last week.
"He gave his life so we could live ours peacefully and safely," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg during the service. "He heard the call of duty and gave it all he had."
Other speakers included Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and a cousin.
Sobbing from the funeral home could be heard resonating through the sound system. Among the cops entering the funeral home was Timoshenko's wounded partner Officer Herman Yan.
After the service, Timoshenko's distraught mother was escorted out of the funeral home, arm-in-arm, by her husband and several police officers.
The service for the Islander born in Belarus was conducted partly in English and partly in an antique Russian dialect that is the language of the Eastern Orthodox church.
A private burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery in New Dorp.
