New York State Police to Purchase New Glock Pistol
(Albany, NY – November 9, 2006) - New York State Police Superintendent Wayne E. Bennett announced today the purchase of 5,400 Glock pistols. The Glock model 37, a .45 G.A.P.* caliber, was chosen after careful consideration and recommendation and will be used to upgrade the current issue Glock model 17, 9mm pistol.
"The New York State Police constantly strives to provide the best equipment for our people. The present Glock 17 has performed well for our people for the past 17 years," said Superintendent Bennett. "After several shooting incidents in recent years, including the shooting death of Trooper Andrew "A.J." Sperr, the State Police chose to evaluate other options. Our decision to purchase the Glock 37, a new model pistol introduced by Glock in the last year, was made after careful consideration, with the greatest importance emphasizing the safety of our Members."
A committee was formed in March of 2006, following the shooting death of Trooper Sperr in Chemung County on March 1, 2006, to evaluate the effectiveness of the currently issued Glock 17, 9 mm automatic handgun. The committee had two important criteria that the new weapon had to meet in order to be considered. First, the weapon would have to be superior to that of the current issued sidearm, and second, the level of accuracy at which our members shoot could not be compromised.
Ultimately, the decision was made that Glock pistols would be examined, in consideration of the facts that replacement would create minimal impact to ongoing day-to-day operations of the Division. All Glock pistols are essentially the same weapon as the issued Model 17 that is currently carried, operationally, dimensionally, and with respect to training considerations, making any transitions seamless.
After considerable review and testing by the State Police, the Glock 37, a .45 G.A.P. caliber, was chosen for its superior performance.
The State police expect to have the new handgun distributed to their employees by spring of 2007.
* .45 G.A.P. (Glock Automatic Pistol) is Glocks designation for a unique 45 caliber round specific to the Glock model 37. The pistol is not fully automatic.
